Emmitt Smith is known as a Dallas Cowboys legend. He won three Super Bowls with the team, an MVP award, and is the NFL’s all-time rushing leader with 18,355 yards. No one else has even reached 17,000.
Having such a successful career should mean Smith is only in the news for positive reasons. That is far from the case and the latest story attached to his name is a shocking one.
A recent lawsuit claims Smith and several associates of his defrauded a Native American investment group to the sum of $2.5 million, as reported by Chron. This was all allegedly done under the guise of funding a Texas solar farm.
Cowboys Legend Emmitt Smith Accused of Serious Fraud
The report, written by Eddie Maisonet of Chron, notes how the fraud appears to be similar to that of a traditional Ponzi scheme. Smith and his partners allegedly took this investment to pay back others, while the Native American investors were left waiting for a loan repayment that never came.
“Essentially, like a Ponzi scheme.”
My latest for @chron on Emmitt Smith being sued by Kituwah Energy—a business entity owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians—in a multimillion-dollar fraud case involving a Texas solar farm.https://t.co/yV7Go6hric

This is a shocking story and also a sad one. Smith has always seemed like a likable guy and not someone who would commit high-level fraud. His name is now tarnished for a younger audience who may be learning about him and his career for the first time. Committing alleged fraud against Native Americans is not exactly something a good person does.
Of course, these are just accusations from a lawsuit at this point. The claim itself is just a serious one and something that may be easy to prove. That is not good news for the NFL’s all-time rushing king.
