Why the WNBA is Taking a Break Right Before the Playoffs

WNBA

The WNBA is nearing the end of the regular season and all eight playoff spots have been secured. So why is the league going on a break from August 31 until September 17?

The timing is odd, but the reasoning makes sense.

WNBA Going on Break for International Tournament

The league is taking a break so players can take part in the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The event will be held in Berlin, Germany from September 4-13 and plenty of WNBA stars will be taking part.

Plenty of attention will be on Team USA as the roster is absolutely stacked. The team features Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese among other notable names. Clark and Reese being teammates will be fascinating for fans to watch after the two have battled at both the college and pro levels. They are both also at the center of seemingly every WNBA storyline.

The timing is not ideal but this tournament should serve as a nice tune-up for players ahead of the postseason. It will also help break up the day-to-day drama that seems to surround the WNBA in 2026. Players can get back in a basketball-first mindset and play competitive games against the best players in the world.

The league will just be hoping fans are locked into the event as well, building hype for the remainder of the season and the postseason. The fact this break comes when the NFL and college football are getting underway is a big challenge to overcome.
